Deb is the creator of REALISTIC SELF DEFENSE FOR WOMEN. She has designed a self protection and empowerment program
for women that involves physical as well as mental strategies.

Her  Martial Arts journey began in 1993, twenty years after
first watching "Enter the Dragon" staring Bruce Lee. The
mystic of Martial Arts had remained with her and ultimately
she decided that she should 'try'  the discipline before she
became too old to participate. (an incorrect assumption). After researching various styles, she
was intrigued by Kung Fu, joined a local studio and continued to train and teach in that style for ten years.

Early on in her training she grew frustrated during grueling self defense classes because certain techniques did not work for her (and some of her peers). Though she believed that the 'fault' was theirs, she wondered how long it would actually take to be able to effectively master all the techniques. "If students join a studio to learn how to protect themselves, shouldn't the techniques work almost immediately"? During this period of time she began to 'quietly' experiment with various movements to see if she could get away using something other than the required technique.

What she discovered was that the ELEMENT OF SURPRISE  alone typically served her well. In Martial Arts self defense is usually taught that if 'A' happens you do such and such technique, therefore, everyone who trains together knows the attack as well as the counter attack. This is not practical in terms of fighting back in the real world. When a real fight occurs it is quick, aggressive and very unpredictable (watch a few encounters on a blog website  and you will understand how messy 'REAL' fights are)!

After discovering the benefits of the element of surprise, Deb quickly also realized that natural and basic movements, rather than complicated techniques, were more reliable and enabled her to break away from various grabs and holds. Though she has continued to increase her Martial Arts knowledge in several styles, it is because of these early discoveries that Deb's focus continues to be to teach 'basic', 'natural' and 'easy to recall' self defense movements to women and adolescent girls.   "I love Martial Arts and the building of knowledge and techniques, but, if you are not going to train on a regular basis and for a significant period of time, that will enable you to retain the techniques, you are wiser to attend a seminar with simple principles! My strategies and goals are to instruct women 1) how to reduce the odds of being a victim first and foremost and 2) to teach basic movements, through realistic self defense, to women that would otherwise receive no instruction".
I would like women to view my self-protection program as a vehicle to empowerment, courage and change. We are each unique and have so much potential, which is often trapped within fear and disbelief in ourselves. Through self-protection I teach and encourage a complete health & wealth dynamic as well as supporting and encouraging other women to succeed

Content: Strikes, targeting, releases and counter attacks from various grabs and holds. Designed specifically for women by a woman.
.

Self defense techniques must come from a natural response or instinct in order to be recalled and applied under extreme stress.

Learn and experiment self-defense techniques from a place of flexibility.
If someone suggests another release/strike/target listen. Try it out. Train outside of the box. Do not believe in a technique just because you are told 'it will work" or because you respect your teachers abilities.

Techniques must focus on a women's strengths and the perpetrators weaknesses.

Do not share your knowledge. Eighty percent of abuse comes from someone the victim knows, and may truly trust.

Keep self defense as simple as possible.
If you do not practise complicated techniques often and over a long period of time you will forget them. Also, if you do not practice them with the same intensity as  a 'real' attack you will 'REALISTICALLY' not use them when you need them. The simpler and more natural reaction is more likely to be recalled and applied.

You can learn basic self defense very quickly. Avoidance immediately.

Not all techniques work for everyone. Just because one person is able to apply a technique does not mean that another person can apply  the same technique. If a technique does not feel natural or you can not make it work quickly, it's probably not the best one for you to rely on to save your life. If you are working with an adult male and he can not make it work--unless you plan on doing a ton of practising and retention work--you will also not be able to make it work.

Mental self defense preparation is at least as important as the physical.

You are never too young or old to develop an awareness protection strategy.

As women we encounter different challenges in learning how to physically protect ourselves. Often, techniques that are learned in a Martial Arts environment are not practical for a woman to apply in reality. An attacker is typically stronger, taller, heavier, faster, angrier and has the element of surprise on his/her side. Techniques and systems designed to release holds and free women from pins must be designed based on these limitations.  Women's techniques should  focus on their strengths and the attackers weaknesses.  Never underestimate the strength of an attacker, nor over estimate your abilities. If you can avoid a dangerous situation, pursue that path.

-Women are assaulted too often.

-We as a society need to say NO to abuse.

-There needs to be more awareness and education beginning at a very young age  to help break the cycle of abuse. Denial is not the answer.

-Families need to seek out support from professionals that can help them deal with abuse.

-Men need to say NO to abuse.

-Women/girls need to be made more aware of warning signs in abusive relationships and avoid certain personality types.

-Women/girls need to support each other.

-Of all women who are sexually assaulted, 69% are assaulted by men they know. (owd 1995,1).

-31% of sexual assaults occur in dating and acquaintance relationships.
(owd 1995,2).

-According to Statistics Canada,
Only 6% of sexual assaults are reported to the police.
(owd 1995,1).

-In 51% of all incidence of dating violence reported by Canadian women, the perpetrator was under the influence of alcohol. (johnson 1996, 128)      (metrac stats sheet).

-43% of all wife assaults results in medical attention.

-25% of women experienced sexual touching and another 24% of women experienced a violent sexual attack. (johnson 1996, 50).

-In a Canadian study, 25% of all female post-secondary students in 1993 had been physically and/or sexually assaulted by a male date or boyfriend.
(johnson 1996)

-very few women take any type of self defense training.

EMOTIONAL ABUSE
is when someone uses ways to hurt your feelings, such as calling you names, teasing you or telling you what to do.
PHYSICAL ABUSE takes the form of slaps, kicks, pushes, punches, pins, grabs, holds, physically preventing you from separating from the situation.
SEXUAL ABUSE is when you are forced to participate in sexual actions that you do not want to.

How aware of your environment are you?
In just one session you can increase your awareness significantly.

Have you ever been in a situation where you felt physically vulnerable or threatened?

Most women will answer "yes" to both of these questions, and, yet, are generally doing little to feel safer. Women typically do not have the time to learn how to protect themselves, or worse, do not see the value in self defense training. Women are caregivers and are more likely to send their children to a Martial Arts studio rather than themselves.

Unfortunately, everyday, women become victims under ordinary circumstances. It is time that women
become proactive and learn how to be less of a target and how to reduce the odds that they will become a victim of a violent attack. Realistic Self Defense for Women is about just that: reducing the odds that you will be the victim of a violent attack.

Listed below are some of what you will learn about when you attend a 'PUBLIC' Realistic Self Defense Seminar with Deb.

Physical Training: How to strike and what to strike. Basic releases from common grabs and holds. Practical  to learn and easy to recall.
Awareness Training:
How aware are you, your family and friends? What to watch for, how to become less vulnerable.
Avoidance Training: Steer away from trouble.
Lets Be Realistic: What self defense techniques are you actually able to apply under extremely stressful encounters? Seminars verse ongoing training.
Empowerment: Women's strengths verse an attackers weaknesses. How you can transfer Realistic Self Defense principles to your daily life. Drawing strength and learning from other powerful women.
Personal Safety: Your daily life. What have you done to reduce the odds that you/your family could be the victim of a violent crime? The obvious and the not so obvious.
Home and Work Safety: The two locations that you spend most of your life. How can you make them more safe?
Automobile Safety Strategies:
How much time do you spend in your vehicle?
Managing Fear and Responding: Fight or flight or the deer in the headlights look?
Intermediate Physical Training: Variation methods from the basic ideas. Building intent.
Fitness and Realistic Self Defense Combined: Get in shape applying strikes and techniques.

1) Corporate and Small Business Seminars.
As an owner, or  human resource/safety employee are you concerned for the safety of your workers?  Are you interested in them attending an educational and empowering seminar? RSD provides your female workers with a protection strategy. You can arrange for one RSD session or a series of shorter sessions.

2) Secondary/post secondary School Programs:
RSD training is not only about physical self defense techniques.  Though the physical techniques are designed specially for females, we also instruct avoidance training. If the choice is to avoid physical confrontation or to fight, which is the wisest and most likely to leave you uninjured? Young women need role models, they need guidance and direction from an instructor that understands their fears, concerns and physical limitations.

3) Unique!! FUND RAISING SEMINARS.   I believe strongly in sharing knowledge, helping others and 'giving back'. Because of this I offer a 2 hour seminar to help you raise money. You provide the space and the women - I will teach for FREE.
"Deb raised almost $1000.00 for my cause which was Leukemia research". D.A.

(NOTE: This seminar is limited to certain fund raisers).

Women's Self Defense and Martial Arts are usually not one in the same. If you want to 'defend' yourself you will need to locate a teacher that understands what a woman is able to accomplish against a stronger attacker.

If you are looking for a school to train at go and watch a few self defense classes. Afterwards ask yourself if you could do the techniques successfully within a short period of time and if you think you will remember the movements when you stop training.
